About Boston College

Boston College was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1863 and, with 3 teachers and 22 students, opened its doors on September 5, 1864. Through its first seven decades, it remained an exclusively liberal arts institution with emphasis on the Greek and Latin classics, English and modern languages, and philosophy and religion. Jesuits are active in all aspects of University life, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, and holding administrative appointments.  Members of the community offer Ignatian retreats, extracurricular programs, and spiritual direction to faculty, staff, and students.

Boston College offers more than thirty men's and women's varsity sports, all of which compete at the NCAA Division I level. BC ranks sixth in the nation in Division I student-athlete graduation rates; its football Eagles have one of the highest graduation rates of any Division 1-A program in the country. In addition to its varsity teams, the department sponsors 49 intramural, recreational, and club sports, many housed in the University's Silvio O. Conte Forum, a state-of-the-art athletic and convocation center. More than 6,000 undergraduates participate in the sports annually.

In addition to everything the city of Boston has to offer, Boston College has a variety of cultural organizations, including musical performance groups, dance troupes, and theatre productions, ranging from classical to contemporary. Among the musical groups, students find a gospel choir and a pep band, a capella groups and jazz ensembles. The McMullen Museum of Art regularly mounts critically acclaimed exhibitions, including past surveys of work by Edvard Munch and Caravaggio. The Robsham Theater Arts Center presents dozens of performances throughout the year, including dance recitals, student-directed plays, and musical productions. The annual Arts Festival is a three-day celebration of the hundreds of Boston College faculty, students, and alumni involved in the arts.
